  • The Maley Lab is made up of microbiologists, computer scientists, evolutionary biologists, artists, research technologists, and geneticists. We explore the evolution of cancer using a variety of tools, techniques, and transdisciplinary ways of thinking.

    Carlo Maley, PhD

    Lab Director

     

    Prof. Maley is a cancer biologist, evolutionary biologist and computational biologist, working at the intersection of those fields. His lab uses genomic data mining, phylogenetics, computational modeling, as well as wet-lab techniques to develop better methods to prevent cancer and improve cancer management.     Angelo Fortunato, PhD

    Assistant Research Professor

     

     

    Dr. Angelo Fortunato’s research focuses on cancer evolution, cancer biology, evolutionary biology and molecular genetics. He is working on human cancer and development of novel model organisms in cancer. He received his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Rice University, Houston, Texas, and a second Ph.D. in Experimental and Clinical Oncology, from University of Florence, Italy.     Diego Mallo, PhD

    Postdoctoral Research Associate

    Diego Mallo is a biologist and computational phylogeneticist aspiring to understand the evolution of somatic cells. He develops computational methods that use genomic information to reconstruct the past; specifically, how cancers initiate and evolve within a patient. He thinks that understanding the mechanisms and dynamics of this process are not only discoveries by themselves but will also change how cancer is prevented and managed in the clinic. He has also worked on evolutionary modeling and species tree reconstruction methods and is a firm supporter of open source and data. In his free time, you may find him backpacking in a national park, cycling, or skiing.

    Steffi Kapsetaki, PhD

    Postdoctoral Research Associate

    After completing a Masters & Ph.D. at Oxford on social evolution, the major evolutionary transitions in individuality, and specifically the evolution of multicellularity, Dr. Kapsetaki was enthused by the idea of looking at cancer from an evolutionary perspective. That is, as a selfish element in a cooperative cellular society, the multicellular organism. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr. Kapsetaki will be using this perspective to tackle several questions, including connections between fusion, chimerism, and the evolution of transmissible cancers. She will also be using placozoa as an experimental model system.
    In her spare time, Dr. Kapsetaki will be performing at concert venues as a pianist and will be exploring art, poetry, composition, songwriting, and photography.

    Shri Narayanan

    Assistant Research Technologist

    Shrinath is a research volunteer in the lab. He has an undergraduate degree (B.Tech) in Biotechnology from Anna University. He received a master degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Dallas. He has been trained as a molecular biologist. During his masters, he worked with Dr.Nikki Delk on examining the effects of cytokines in breast cancer cells with respect to its receptor status. Since then, he has started to develop a strong interest in the evolutionary perspectives of cancer development and multicellularity. Currently, he is working with Dr. Maley on developing a model to assess therapeutic resistance in cancer.

    Valerie Harris

    PhD Student

    Valerie's work focuses in on comparative oncology, which aims to compare the rates, incidence and etiology of cancers across animals and throughout the Tree of Life. She is primarily interested in studying the incidence of cancer in wild-caught flighted animals: bats and birds. In addition to gaining valuable insights into the incidence of cancer in wild, natural populations of animals, she hopes that her work can be translated into a One-Health perspective, a concept that closely ties the health of wild animals and humans to the ecosystems that we share. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Biology in 2014 from Arizona State University and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biological Design.

    Sareh Seyedi
     

    PhD Student

    Sareh is conducting research on​ cancer and developing her expertise in evolutionary biology and ecology of cancer. Her current project is entitled ‘Multidrug Adaptive Therapy’ and she is working to test multi-drug adaptive therapy in a pre-clinical model of breast cancer.

    Daniel Saha
     

    PhD Student

    Daniel received his undergraduate degree from Presidency College and MS in Molecular Biophysics from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biology currently working on computational simulations of adaptive therapy in cancer.

    Zach Compton
     

    PhD Student

    Zach received his undergraduate degree in Genetics, Cell, and Developmental Biology and I is currently pursuing his doctorate in Evolutionary Biology. Zach is interested in all of the intersections that evolutionary theory makes with cancer biology, with a particular focus on the comparative oncology projects. He currently studies the incidence and etiology of cancers in the large Felines.

    Pamela Winfrey

    Scientific Research Curator

    Pamela Winfrey specializes in art/science exhibitions, programs, residencies, and artworks. She has been the lead curator in emerging art forms for Creative Capital, represented the United States on the interactive arts panel at Ars Electronica in Linz, and worked for many years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.     Shawn Rupp, M.S.
     

    Bioinformatician

    Shawn is an evolutionary biologist and bioinformatician specializing in making software for streamlining and expanding genomic and metagenomic analysis.

    Aika Schneider-Utaka

    Undergrad Research Assistant

    Aika is currently working with an evolutionary approach of the molecular analysis of tumor suppressor genes in placental mammals.

    Adam Smith
     

    Undergrad Research Assistant

    Currently working on Carlo's cell lineage project in which we're working on methods to track cells' development and changes as it goes from "normal" to cancerous; leading to the possibility of using the tracking method in all sorts of applications.
